St. Andrew youth performing at Puppet Camp, 2007.
Puppet camp, with a tropical theme, was held again this summer. The participants learned about Presbyterian missionaries in Guatemala and Vanuatu. The following Sunday Service was planned and presented by the Education Community and the Puppet Camp participants.

Our youth participated in Souper Bowl 2007 collecting $50 and about 40 food items for the Billings Food Bank. Donations collected from puppet camp were given to missions in Guatemala and Vanuatu.

The youth also purchased $330 of clothing and toys for five children at Christmas with the generous donations received at the November bake sale.

This summer one of our youth attended the week-long Presbyterian Youth Triennium at Purdue University in Indiana. Others among our youth have attended Westminster Spires summer camp and retreats offered by Yellowstone Presbytery.

All of the youth and many adults presented an enjoyable musical, "Open Hearts In Bethlehem," at Christmas. Many other people made this production possible with behind the scenes help.

The youth planned and presented the worship service for Youth Sunday in November. The children and youth continue to improve in their hand chime skills, and share their musical and other talents in Sunday morning services.

Adult

Sunday School - 9:30 a.m. each Sunday morning in the Sanctuary.
The adult education classes and discussions at St. Andrew address modern day issues and use the most current scholarship available for Bible study. Being disciples means bringing the walk of Christ into our everyday living. That doesn't mean we have to leave our intelligence and science at the door.

In the past year the adult Sunday School class has studied DVD presentations of the church in the 21st Century, with seminar presentations by Marcus Borg, Brian McLaren, and Diana Butler-Bass, and "Living the Questions," an ecumenical DVD curriculum with a wide variety of progressive theologians.

Beginning in March, the adult class will be using the Bible Workbench curriculum. It is a lectionary-based curriculum to help us engage and internalize the scripture passages for each Sunday. We will be using the Bible Workbench through May.

Book Study Group
The Book Study Group provides an informal setting where participants can join a discussion of a wide variety of books dealing with religious thought. The group is open to anyone wishing to join a dialog in a comfortable atmosphere which provides an intellectual challenge and growth in religious literacy.

The group meets Wednesdays at 12:00 noon and ends at 1:00 for those needing to get back to work or who have other appointments. The group is presently meeting in the Garden Room at St. Andrew, but in the past it has met at restaurants in the downtown area. Members may bring their lunch to eat during the discussions.

The books are selected by the group. The reading pace is kept at a moderate level, typically a chapter each week. The average book takes 10-12 weeks to cover. The group has recently discussed the following books:

  • "The First Christmas" by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan

  • "Making Sense of Paul" by Virginia Wiles

  • "The World's Religions" by Huston Smith

  • "The Heart of Christianity" by Marcus Borg

  • "Remedial Christianity" by Paul Laughlin

The discussion facilitator is David Kimball. You may contact him through the church office at 656-9256 or office@standrewbillings.org.
